Av. Da Liberdade was born to fulfil Lisbon’s desire for its own Parisian-style Champs-Élysées. Its parallel roads are divided by long tongues of Calcada Portuguesa ( traditional cobblestone pavements).
The boulevard has quickly renewed its appeal. Existing designers stores like ( Louis Vuitton, Prada, Armani, Gucci, etc, mark their presence, theatres, and restaurants proliferate and bring a new urban feel. Av da Liberdade also hosts its very own street carnival on the night of June 12th, when Lisbon’s neighbourhoods compete head-to-head in the annual Marchas Populares ( “Popular Marches”), displaying traditional songs and dances in a euphoria of colour and music- an event that ends in drinks and snacks across the city until sunrise.
